240 & 940 Auto Transmission Fluid recommendations[ALL/1998] posted by Norm Lizotte on

I have three Volvo sedans, a 1987 240DL, a 1992 940GL, and a 1993 240DL, all with 4-speed automatic transmissions (3-speed w/overdrive). The manuals call for Dextron II fluid, I've been using Dextron III, and draining what will come out of the pan through the plug (about 2.75 quarts) with every other engine oil change (this translates to auto transmission fluid partial drain/refills about every 6000 miles).

I've been reading about synthetic transmission fluid. What has the experience been with synthetic fluid? Should I switch? If so, do I need to do anything special before replacing the fluid, like drain the complete transmission? If a complete draining is required, what's the best way to do this? "Pumping" the fluid out of the transmission through a disconnected oil cooler line with the engine running requires you to keep adding new fluid until the old fluid coming from the disconnected line is clean (indicating new fluid). If I'm replacing with synthetic fluid, won't this "pumping" method mix the regular and the synthetic fluid?

Looking forward to your comments.

What you're doing is fine! I do the same at 5000 miles and trans fluid's always clean.I don't open lines, radiator's prone to crack, and it's a messy affair. I use Mobil1 in the motor but won't use synthetic trans fluid. Trans maker Aisin doesn't recommend it.Synthetics are causing leaks, too.

It does not matter which brand name AFT (DextronIII) you use but, it must state on the bottle that the AFT you are purchasing meets OEM. The more better brand name you purchase the more you pay for that brand name. Concumers Report did a test with motor oil a while back. I'm hoping they do the same with transmoission oil. I'm sure thay will find the same results.

Henry,

Is there a way to suggest to Consumers Reports that they do an article on transmission fluids?

Norm,

I've already suggested to Consumers Report about such a test by snail mail.
As to you other enquire about the Mann Oil (motor) filters, I was told that Mann in West Germany makes the filters for Volvo with the Volvo name. If you take the Volvo oil filter and the Mann oil filter you can see they are constructed in the same manner. For some strange reason my local volvo shop uses volvo oil filters but, they use Mann air filters instead of volvo air filters. They use Bosch spark plugs instead of volvo spark plugs. I'm guessing that Bosch makes volvo's spark plugs?
