'88 760 Turbo Wagon Starting problem[ALL/1998] posted by Dean on

765 Turbo w/140 k. Mostly when cold will not start. Battery OK and starter cranks, but will not start. Problem lasts anywhere from a minute to 35-40 minutes. After many attempts, car suddenly will start, then operates normally (no stalling).
Thereafter car usually starts normally. Problem then recurrs after sitting overnight, or engine getting cold after a long drive.
This problem occurred 2 years ago and lasted intermittently for several months (mechanic could not find the problem---car usually starts at some point before problem can be isolated, then everything appears normal). Problem then went away completely, only to come back recently.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Volvo really have problem with fuel pump relay and fuel pressure regulator. Try to hear if the fuel pump start when you turn the key on without starting the engine.

check for fuel pump relay corroded terminals , at fuel pump fuse,both tank
and main pump fuse. Can you hear the pump start when you turn the ignition on?

Your car probably has a LH-Jetronic ignition. With it the engine must turn over before either you will have spark or fuel. I had similar problems and it never failed completely. It was the Hall Effect Sensor in the distributor. When it it NOT working check for about 12 volts on the red lead at the distributor. If that is OK check terminal 5 on the power stage. It should pulsate from 0 to 12 volts. To this with lead one of the ignition coil disconnected. This is the control signal that tells the computer that the engine is turning.
