The motor for the right, rear window in my '91 740 quit working. The mechanic I took it to says the 91's have a unique motor -- none available in local junk yards. He says the only solution is new motor from dealer -- with installation a bill of $500 to $600. Any other solutions?

How do you know its the motor and not the switch. The motors are very reliable while the switch contacts often get corroded and develop a high resistance. If its the switch they can be taken apart, the contacts cleaned, and everything works as good as new.

My 87 (same window) is very slow and the switch on the door itself doesnt work
I concurr that the switch may be the problem

Check the switch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The switch will be under $20 with your VCOA discount and more than likely is the problem. These switches don't have the best reputation. I've taken all mine apart more than once to clean (works for a while) but replacement is simpler....

The motor itself, if this is actually the problem, can be taken apart and cleaned. Normally they corrode from lack of use and this is what causes the malfunction. This corrosion can be cleaned off the internal components.

Be certain the switches are not the problem.
