740T Air Cleaner Box[ALL/1998] posted by Dana Woods on

I have a 1988 740 Turbo whose air cleaner box has lost the clip brackets (broken off when a local repair shop changed the filter). Bottom line is I need to intall a new one and I wonder if anyone can give an opinion as to how difficult it would be to do this, and if I were to look for a used one, what years use the same filter box. Though not an experienced mechanic, I am mostly worried about Bosch "meter" that in inline with the air intake. (what is this?)
Thanks.

It's not hard to replace the air filter box. Just remove the rubber hose pipe from the turbo to air mass meter and check it to make sure it is not turning to a goo at the turbo end. If it is, replace it, $140 from the dealer. The filter box comes out after removing the bolt between the front of the car and the air box. The passenger side has an air inlet into the fender well so it will have to be removed from there. Any decent junk yard will have one, just be carefull with the air mass meter screen. A local grease monkey disloged mine so it hangs out. Also, if you are going to keep the car, get good gas shocks and put on IPD sway bars. It will make all the difference in the world, kandling wise that is.

Don't be too critical of the mechanic. I've had them break off when REMOVING the clips to change the original filter at the 30,000 mile service.
One thing which can help with filter installation is to spray the foam edges of the filter with WD-40 or equivalent. A word of caution- DO NOT use silicone spray. This can ruin the oxygen sensor. The silicone will permanently coat the sensor when it gets hot enough to burn (a.k.a combustion).

The air box clips on my '86 740T are on the bottom portion of the air box, the air mass meter is the top portion which the clips hold tight against the filter and bottom portion. You only need to replace the bottom portion of the airbox if the clips have broken off. Really a dumb design in my opinion, such a thin piece of plastic is holding the metal clips to the air box body. A couple of mine have broken as well, but not enough to make me find another air box. At least $100 from the dealer. Best best is to get one from a junk yard. You should also check the operation of the air box fresh/hot air thermostat control while you are at it (assuming you get one from a junk yard).

Be careful when you replace the air filter box
There is an air intake the inside of the fender. If not fitted corectly
can cause air starvation. When you accelerate hard the pipe sucks up against the
fender and it feels like the engine was shut off.Can sometimes cause high
pitched scream thats near impossible to duplicate just reving the engine.
Body shops often get this wrong and cars get brought in for poor acceleration.
