97 850R Wagon Tires/Whls[ALL/1998] posted by Steve on

I hope this isn't redundant, but...I am going to buy a 97 850R Wagon and, yes, it has those 17" Titanium Wheels and Pirelli Tires. I understand that those Pirelli's are the ONLY tire that will fit those wheels, correct? Accordingly, I am gonna buy a set of OEM Steel and some good snows. Do any of you own one of these cars? How do you like it? And...What can you tell me about Gislaved(?) tires and will they fit OEM steel wheels? Pros/Cons of other tire/wheel combos?

Thank You! Steve

More than just the Pirelli's will fit those wheels you need a tire same size and speed rating thats all. They should be a 205-40-17 ZR rated for 150+mph.

About the snow tires I bought some Patriot 195-60-15 snow tires for my 244 turbo they were extremely cheap, like 50.00 ea and they work great! Look once at NTB National Tire and Battery if you have one near you.

Not true.
Pirellis are not the only tire that will fir the car. Yokohama and Nitto also supply tires that will fit. I believe that they are 225/40 or 45/17. Many tire manufacturers make thes size. You can also put a wider tire, and/or a slimmer sidewall on the wheels.

After having a set of BBS 17" wheels (that bent very easily) with 205x45x17 P-zeros I put a set of stock Volvo 17" late model(7 spoke) wheels with 215x45x17 Toyo Proxes T-1's on my 94 855T. I would not put anything less than a 45 profile tire on for street use and 215 nominal tread width is the largest that will fit without mods. There are at least a dozen tires available in the 205 & 215 x45x17 size.

I put Pirelli 205x55x16 210P snows on my original Volvo 16" turbo wheels in the winter. Work great, but any resonably good set of snow tires is well worth the investment.

I have a 96 850 turbo wagon. Up in Ottawa, we have lots of experience with snow and in the past I have ran 4WD vehicles, and RWD vans with Blizzaks.

I found that the Gislaved Nord Frost IIs are a very good snow tire. Good traction on snow and ice, but not so squirmy that they make dry pavement driving unenjoyable. If you've read any reviews, the IIs are a big improvement over previous Gislaved snow tires. The Blizzaks on the other hand are slightly better on ice, but squirmy in high speed cornering on dry roads.

Check your owners manual, but I believe the recommended size is 185/65/15. Your Volvo dealer (at least in Canada) usually has a package deal that includes steel rims. I don't know where you live, but if there is much snow at all I definitely would not want to drive with 17" Pirellis (I found the 16" Michelin Pilots on my car a dicey proposition for snow).

Regarding hubcaps, the Volvo ones don't look so hot and are overpriced in my opinion. I recommend the 15" Vectra hubcaps that IPD sells.
