240 Trans Problem[ALL/1998] posted by Irv Trudell on

I have a 1985 240 GL with 4spd trans and OD. I have been having a problem where at times when coming to a stop it does not want to go into 1st gear, at times it will not go into 1st or2nd. Our first thought was the pressure plate had developed a broken spring as I had seen this with other cars in the past. The clutch parts were replaced with new factory parts (all were repllaced) and this made no difference. I've been looking at the parts breakdowns and would like to see if anyone agrees with what I think is wrong. I'm not giving my thoughts as I don't want that to be an influence on anyone else. Thanks, in advance, for any input.

Before you go openig up the transmission, do the following. Change the fluid!!!
I had very similar problems with my 83 when I bought it ( along with a non functioing OD. ) Since I didn't have the time to open everything up I "lived" with it until able to fix. Since the OD repair came first, that forced the fluid change. After reinstalling the OD the problem with the difficult engagement just kept getting less and less frequent with finally no problems at all going into any gear at any time. For fun ( and info ) I changed the fluid again only to discover that after about 1000 miles of use it looked just like the stuff I drained out to fix the OD (at 152000). Try the least expensive route first. You may be surprised!!

Definitely do the fluid change thing first.
Also check the shifter "side travel stop" plate. This is located at the bottom of the shift lever in the tunnel/bucket. This can wear/bend so that when you pull the lever to the left (in 1st/2nd throw travel), it moves over too far. I've run into this before. Sometimes you can tell just by driving the car and not pulling it quite all the way over to the left.
