This year I've seen 4 or 5 960 engines been replaced at the local Volvo dealer. Guys tell me it's the main bearing problem. Who knows about this? What's happening?

Personally, I have not heard of this. The only reason I've seen 960 motors replaced were due to a porous casting creating a coolant leak.
