I'm about to buy a set of the Volvo supplied winter wheels, Gislaved Nord Frost tires on steel rims. Any comments, positive or negative, appreciated; options or other suggestions?

Hi Peter,
I am about to do the same thing. I have called around a bit, and some opf the options are Bridgestone Blizzaks (said to be great but soft - i.e. wear quickly), Nokia Hakka 1 (sp?) which some folks here have recommended, and Goodyear Eagle GW or Ultragrip (haven't heard much about these). Michelin should have something as well. The recommended tire size is 195/60/15. Seems like it is hard to get a much better price than what the dealers offers, unles you find something on sale. In Toronto, the dealer package price for 4 steel rims and tires seems to be about $800 CDN (a bit under $600 US) without the hub caps (another $120 CDN or $85 US). Try the Tire Rack site (see link below) for a look at some mail order deals as well as info about certain tires (e.g. Blizzaks). Let me know what you find out.

check out Discount Tire Direct 800.385.3322, Mike Webster. I've bought Blizzaks on OEM steel wheels from them. A better tire here in Buffalo winter than the Michl Alpins I have on other car
