Temperature Compensator[ALL/1998] posted by Nate Merrill on

One day while I was driving my '86 240 wagon down the road, smoke started pouring out the temp. guage. I later found out the problem was a fried green resistor on my temperature compensating board. A parts dealership said it would be $75 to get a new one. Is there any way I can just replace the resistor? The bands all melted so I can't tell what resistance it would be. Also, now that I disconnected my instrument panel, I can't reconnect it so that the speedometer works. Is that due to the lack of a compensator?

Nate,
You should not replace the resistor without determining what caused it to burn up. There must be a short/overload somewhere. It will probably burn up again.
