Extended Warranties[ALL/1998] posted by Vikram Mittal on

All this talk about warranties makes me want to share my current experience.
I just bought a 1994 855 Turbo with the VIP 3/36 (Volvo) warranty. Although
this is expensive compared to the other brands here are some of the
advantages:
o Warranty is for repair at Volvo dealers and using Volvo parts and
repair procedures (replace with new versus rebuilt)
o Most Volvo dealers here have the free loaners which is pretty
convenient rather than using the $25/day rental.
I discovered just 4 weeks later that I need to get my lifters
replaced. Had this been one of the other warranties, this $2000 job
would require approval and what not. With VIP I dropped the car off
at the dealer, they will fix it using original parts and I am driving
a nice loaner 855 with 2K miles on it until the work is done - it
has already been over 9 days. My dealer does all the paperwork.
VIP also will accept regular maintenance done by owner. This is key
although I am sure others will too.
I know of people that have trannies fail and have been required to use
specific shops and also rebuilt parts are used. These shops may not
be Volvo dealers and even if they are, the Volvo dealer might be
required to use rebuilt parts.
This would apply at any Volvo dealer in the US. The extra 3-4 hundred
dollars was worth it to me.
