Crummy 14" Alloy Wheels, 740 GLE, Hubcaps[ALL/1998] posted by Glen on

It is getting cold here in Minnesota and the 14" alloy wheels on my '87 740 were leaking air again. I replaced them with steel wheels from a 240 (I had to drill a guide hole). I never plan on putting the crummy alloy wheels again, but the little 240 donut hubcaps don't do much for me on a 740. Will the full wheel plastic hubcaps found on the newer 14" 740 steel wheels fit the 240 steel wheels? I am assuming Volvo made the full wheel plastic hubcaps for 14" steel wheels? I have a '91 740 with 15" steel wheels and the full wheel plastic hubcaps, that is why I am curious about the same type for 14" steel wheels.

Hej Glen
Yes there are 14" hubcaps for your wheels. The ideal ones are from a 91'-93'
240.The earlier ones had self ejecting center pieces that felt more at home lying on the side of the road.

So thats where all the 240 Wheel Covers dissappear toin the middle of the night!!

All those wheel swappin 740 owners! Well we're onto your scheme now!Attempted Global Domination thru control of the Wheel Cover Sources via an Artificially Created Need....Sounds like a job for Ross Perot!

Circle the 240's Gang! first it's the wheel covers, next its the Turn Signals!!

Where's Steven Sagall when you need him?

Don't worry too much about the steels......I'm running a mixed batch of Volvo steels obtained from a junkyard for my snow tires. The bolt pattern matches, but I pulled the guide pins from the front (didn't do much anyways) to work with some of the "older" types of wheels. If you want to go further, replace the mounting pins in the rear with 10mm bolts (for a flush look) and you can get rid of the darn things entirely.

The offset sems to be universal, and any Volvo wheel of the same size seems to work just as well. You just need to massage it a bit....bit if you do it right it will work. BTW.....some black paint and wheel-covers work really well for winter tires.

Best,
Eric
