244 GL Trans. mount replacement.[ALL/1998] posted by Jess Klopfenstein on

I have gotten contrasting reports on how to replace this mount (transmission)
(automatic, 2.3 Litre).
One is that the trans must be removed and the other that i'm rooting for is that it need not be removed.
Any experience greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Jess Klopfenstein

Jess,
I've replaced the automatic transmission mount and the two motor mounts on a 1984 240DL without removing the transmission. I don't have that car anymore (rear-ended and totaled by the other driver's insurance company) and I don't remember the specific installation method, but the transmission DEFINITELY did not have to be removed. All three mounts (tranny & engine) took an afternoon.

You will not need to remove the transmission! You will need to raise the trans slightly. This can be done by jacking the trans up near the rear with a hydraulic "bottle" jack or something similar jacking against a piece of a 2X4 approx. 30-40 cm long placed crosswise under pan. Remove the nut in the hollow cavity on trans crossmember (17mm). Remove four 14mm bolts, two on each side, that hold crossmember and catching the two alumimum spacers between crossmember and body of car. Remove the two 14mm bolts holding the trans mount bracket to rear of trans. Remove the 17mm nut from bracket securing mount to bracket. Re-assemble with new mount in reverse order. When reinstalling mount to crossmember, lower jack slightly and install nut for mount, then raise jack to allow bolts into car body/frame to be started and tightened.
