240 drivers seat with a twist! How to fix?[ALL/1998] posted by James Grabau on

I have a 240 Dl 1989, with 100k and a drivers seat (back) that has been compressed backwards, resulting in a noticable twist to the right and back. Right shoulder of the driver is about 3 inches farther from the wheel than the left. This is irritating to me and I have resoved to fix it this month. My question is this (these)
-Is this common, and if so have the members of this board dealt with this failure in the past?
-Historically, has the failure been compression and deformation of the foam, or has my frame been bent by the previous owner?
-Givin either scenario, how much should I expect to pay to repair this back ache producing B.S.?
-Need I be concerned for my seat heater if I have the work done by an upholsterer?
Thank you for your help.

Dont try and fix it. If its out of shape, it will be unsafe. Get another seat out of a wreck. If your existing covers are good you cah swap them over to keep the seats matched. If you take your time and work carefully this is not a hard job.
Have fun.

Does the lower back support adjuster, strap, (thingy) work? On my 240 the adjuster is broken, and I think it might be the reason that the seat is so lop-sided. I keep planning on fixing it, but I just haven't gotten around to it. Maybe you've got the same problem?

Dear James;
Funny you bring this up as I just finishing a repair similar to yours. My seats also appeared "twisted." What I found out was the foam padding had actually been torn on the inside. This resulted in one shoulder slightly (several inches) further back. Actually my seat frame was fine and I only needed to replace the foam pad. The new pad cost me about $145, but it fixed the problem and has made the seat very comfortable.

Foam breakdown on the right shoulder of the driver's seat back is a common occurance on the later 240's if you look at the archives... New foam is the fix. Of course the seat still looks twisted.

The seats in a 240 are pretty rugged. Mine are eleven years old and still look like new. I'd agree with the first follow-up here and get a "new" one from a wreck. You can easily replace the ulphostery if you're careful. I've taken mine right out of the car on several occassions to clean, etc. and there's not muhc to do. Just a few nuts to loosen. For about $15.00 you can get a Volvo mechanics book that will give you step-by-step instruction. Good luck.

Yes, the older ones are rugged.
The newer ones, '88- are not so tough. They are a different type of foam and the seat frames are built differently.

This is very common. Get a new seat back foam from the dealer. Another poster stated about $145 for the part. The new one is reinforced to prevent this from happening again. Don't get a seat out of a wreck. It could do the same thing within 6 months. Then what have you accomplished?
The seat heater shouldn't be affected by this repair. The grid is set in a plastic grid which is lifted out of the way during the foam replacement. This is not a terribly difficult job if you have a pair of hog ring pliers and new hog rings.
