First I should admit I have tried nothing. In fact I have not even stuck my nose (upside down and sideways) under the dash. Also, in answer to paul from santa anna's question: my new (to me) car runs very well even now that it is cold. The car's name is Clorn (my girlfriend attempted to use this word in a game of Scrabble the week I got the new car and...).

So there's this hiss coming from under the dash that is clearly related to the position of the brake pedal. Obviously this is some sort of vacuum thing-a-ma-jig that does god knows what. What the hell DOES it do? AND, what can I do to fix it. I have a feeling some 3 in 1 oil may do the trick like it does on an old bicycle pump.

You have a bad seal at the front of your brake booster where it goes into master cylinder. You need to replace brake booster or maybe they sell just the seal. In either case you gotta separate the master cylinder from the booster and see whats going on.

You've got a bad booster, Jarrod. Is the master cylinder leaking brake fluid into the booster? This can cause a good booster to fail after a prolonged m/cyl leak.

No repairing the booster. Find a good one out of a junk car. New boosters are "expensive". The brakes won't fail because of the booster. You'll just lose the power assist.
