940 timing belt question[ALL/1998] posted by christopher stipp on

I have a 1993 940 B230F with 132,000 miles. I purchased vehicle with 100,000 miles and assume the timing belt was changed as directed. Question: if the timing belt fails before I can get one in will it bend the valves or destroy the engine? The Volvo dealership in my city says no, not on this engine; but I thought I would get other opinions. This is not a turbo but has the same engine as the 240s.

The dealer is correct in that your engine will not bend valves if belt goes away. Your engine has a different belt than the 1992 and before model years. Volvo says it's a 100K belt. The belt has rounded teeth whereas the earlier
belts had flat teeth (if you change it, be sure you get the '93 up belt, the wrong belt from earlier models will fit but will not last long).

Abe,
Will the '93 up belt last 100K on the older 240s and 740s engines or are the pulleys also shaped for the rounded teeth?
Thanks

You can't use the late style timing belt w/o changing the three pulleys
that it rides in (crank, cam, & intermediate shaft).
