M410 gearbox on 122S[ALL/1998] posted by Remi Van Audekercke on

I am trying to adapt a M410 gearbox with OD of a 164 to a B20 engine in my 122S.
This gearbox looks much stronger than the M41 (the J-type).
I need it to be stronger because the engine has a lot of power and the OD's of
the m41 don't last long.
The only problem is the bell housing, the one on the M410 fits on the B30
engine not on the B20.
Is there anyone who has done this conversion or knows a solution.
By the way ,there seem to be two types of M410's ,those used on the late P1800E
and those from the 164's. Does anyone have info on this ?

Regards.

You need to get a P1800E M410 bellhousing and 8.25" clutch with 164 splines. Then it's bolt-on, exept you have to make floor tunnel bigger, modify the drive shaft and shifter hole. M410 is so strong you can eliminate the OD safety switch and have 8-speeds!

Thanks for the advice .

One thing seems curious to me, with the M410 came a top cover that has the hole
for the shift stick at the same place as a M41 ,so it fits the floor tunnel hole of my 122S.
This top cover is definately for a M410 (the holes for the little springs are
different from those in a M41 cover).
Did a P1800 E or 164 ever use the long shift stick and the M410 ?
It could be that the M410 is to wide to fit my tunnel.
When I use the OD in the other gears will it hold 130 din HP ?

Regards.

All M410s I've seen, either E or 164, had a remote shifter (Hole back on the floor). If bellhousing bolts're mounted inside, it's a M410. Yes- this beast can handle 200HP even when shifter in 8-spd mode! This 'box is made by German Getrag. You can also use B21-23-230 M45-46-47 'box with B21 bellhousing. 'Box will be a little tilted but works fine! Just bend the shifter. If you have any contact in Finland, they're making Corolla GT 5-spd for Volvos. It's an all out racing "Dogring" box, you can shift without the clutch! This box will fit nicely, it's small yet strong. 5th gear is 1-to-1 ratio, too.

I have seen quite a lot of P1800E(S) and none of them had a M410 , all M41's.
I live in Belgium ,maybe the M410 was only installed in the american P1800E.
Do you know where to get one of these bell housings for the M410 on a B20 ?

Regards.

Try Foreign Autotech/Pennsylvania. Tel -215-441 4421. They have many P1800 parts. You can also surf all Volvo sites and ask. Shouldn't be too difficult to find. I can see if something comes up on my area, too. M410 came on few '70-71 P1800 only. Volvo had to make them for FIA homologation, to be used on the race cars. It has a big, round shifter knob.

When the M410 fits the tunnel of a P1800 would it fit a '67 122S tunnel also ?
The hole for the shift lever is at the right place with the top cover I have.
The bell housing seems very difficult to find , if you come across one please let me know.
