New Air Tools with "Clutches"?[ALL/1998] posted by Stoney on

I was at a "Major" Tire Dealer yesterday and cautioned a Tech. when he was using an Air Gun to install and "torque up" (his words) the lugs on an 850 wheel. He responded that "All our Air Guns have "Clutches" installed and preset to avoid theis problem. Besides we turn down the PSI on the compressor to help avoid this"

I checked all my catalogues of Air Tools and couldn't find any reference to a "Clutch" designed to do this....I assume the guy has his MBA in BullS*%t unless anyone else can verify this fact.

BTW The owner came back and made them remove and reinstall the wheel using a Torque Wrench!

The closest thing to a clutch in a non-maufacturing environment air toll is the torque limiter lug tools that are made of a spring steel and will yield to the impact gun's hammer blows at a torque related to the diameter of the tool. A lot of tire stores use a set of these that are color-coded and they have a chart that lists which tool to use on which car. In factory settings there are multi-driver (as in has 5 sockets on it for all lugs to be installed at one time) impact wrenches that stop when a preset torque is reached. These cost big $$$ and hang from cables that are counterweighted 'cause they weigh a lot.

Abe, this seemed more like a normal air tool, plain black impact socket and beat up chrome plated gun. I have heard of shops putting a limiter on the line to keep PSI below a certain level but not about the spring loaded impact sockets.

I've seen the big toys on the line at Mitsubishi in Normal, Ill. and they are neat! Too ba ya can't use 'em in NASCAR! But tac welding the lugs to the new wheel is also a cool trick!
