V-10 Volvo Engine:[ALL/1998] posted by Henry T. Mui on

About a year ago Volvo got Cosworth (U.K.) to design a V-10 for the in hopes of entering the more upsacale luxury sedan market. The engine was a twin cam 4.3 -liter powerplant that produced an impressive 325 hoursepoer-equilent to the BMW 750il's 5.4-liter V-12. But, news had the project killed because there were only 2 prototypes made. The first one blew up and the second one was ran until
it was history. Another bit of news is that Volvo plans to work with Porsche
for a new six-cylinder engine that is twin-turbocharged with 300-horsepower.This is an upgrade for the Volvo 960 for the year 1999 (U.S.lineup)
....... WoW! With that typ of power under the hood of my Grandfather's Volvo
I bet you he'll be getting a lot more speeding tickets from the New York Thruway Patrol. By the way my Grandfather does drive a Volvo and he loves to speed!

TwinTurbo 960 is nothing new. It was sold in Germany few years ago. (Still is?) Svein from Norway sent me a picture of it. It's an impressive engine, looks good, too ! It was not suitable for "politically correct" Swedes, though....Speed hungry Germans got the pleasure.
Volvo V10 rumours are around F1 engine, too. TWR Arrows/Tom Walkinshaw is trying to get Volvo to pay Brian Hart F1 engine and to put "Volvo" on the valve covers. I don't see how typical Volvo driver could relate to F1. They should develop a "Volvo Miata", a fun, inexpensive RWD sportscar for young generation. I'm not young but I'd buy it, too!

I was informed by Dan Jonston from Volvo Cars of North America. They may have restarted the project again. Sometimes it's very hard to get a straight answer from R & D at Volvo. Secondly, I was not aware that Volvo had the twin-turbocharged engines in Germany. All they inform me was that the newer Volvo platform P-23 is due to debut in 1998-99. The twin-turbo six cylinder was due for U.S. release in '99 to replace the 960 series for North America.
