Lousy gas mileage[ALL/1998] posted by Paul S. on

The 262C get crappy gas mileage. What can I say? 10-14 MPG. I won't list everything I've done, but here's some suspects on the B28F:
1) Control Pressure Regulator. How do I test this pup? If it's not working properly, can the car run really rich? (ie crappy mileage).
2) Timing. With all I've done to the car I've never checked the timing. (Crazy ain't I?) I don't own a timing light, need to buy. (I used to own one 20 years ago when I was a teenage nut living at home - my dad sold it or something when I left the nest). Assuming my timing is off, how much will my mpg improve if I correct the timing?
3) My idle is crappy too. See #2 above. Idle is stable but still pretty rough.
4) Tested the intankprepump seems to work ok. Tested ok, noise wise.
5) Brand new injectors. New wires, cap, rotor platinum plugs. I've cleaned the air plenums. New 02 sensor.
6) Car warms up nicely with a new thermostat.
7) I've run a lot of fuel system cleaners through.
8) The first 1/2 tank of fuel per the gage seems to go slowly, but the second half of the tank dissapears rapidly.
Help.

If your engine is in good shape- good compression, no noisy valvetrain (indicating worn cams, rockers), etc. you're lucky! If everything is good there, then the timing could very well be retarded. You can always set it the old-fashioned way- advance it a little and listen for 'pinging' or detonation. When you do hear it , back off just a little. My wife's 265 w/ V-6 (dead now) used to get around 19-20 mpg

Paul - Platinum plugs? I was going to get these for my freshly rebuilt B21F, but my consultant/mechanic (i.e., professional) said that the Bosch platinums fouled too easily in Volvos. Go with NGK for the more old fashioned looking sparkplug. Less of a chance of fouling with the old-fashioed look of NGK. He said the Volvo engines tend to run rich and that NGK produce a hooter spark than the Bosch platinums. As an aside to B21F owners, he sets the timing at 17 degrees BTDC, a full 7 degrees beyond what Volvo specifies. My engine has been running quite nicely (albeit a bit cool) since June with this setting. About Volvo fuel gages. They all seem to move slow for the first half tank, then spped up considerably after that. I remember this feature even on my old '64 PV 544.
