Convert generator to alternator[ALL/1998] posted by Kent Campbell on

Through the years have not read any material pertaining to comverting a generator supported system to an alternator charged system. Specifically, I have a '65 122S wagon. Can it be done and is it worth the effort????

YES - it can be done and it's worth doing. Too bad you don't have a '67-68 B18. Those blocks have an altenator boss already. Volvo used to sell "bolt-on" altenator bracket for early B18. I don't think you'll find them now. You must fabricate a mounting bracket either for Volvo or some other altenator. It's not that difficult. I prefer Chevy one-wire altenators. They're powerfull, cheap and easy to wire! '79-85 Mazda Rx7 and '85-87 Corolla GTS are the other good ones. Good Luck!

In addition to Topi's good suggestions:
Another option would be a standard type Chrysler alternator. I'm particularly happy with the post '70 electronic regulator (external) ones, which charge more than you could ever dream of using even at idle.
I've done this on a few cars; it works OK, the biggest drawback is that these alternators have such a large diameter that the adjustment range becomes limited. The stock lower generator bracket from the genearator works to bolt the alternator to with one long bolt+lockwasher+locknut from the hardware store. The top bracket for adjusting will fit from a B20 w/ alternator. I further seem to remember that I ended up using a belt that was .5" shorter than stock on my B18.
