740 Water Leak[ALL/1998] posted by Bob Coates on

My (new to me) 1990 740 Wagon took in a lot of water in a recent rain storm. Both the front and rear floor area on the passenger side were soaked real bad. I removed the seat and all the carpeting and dried it all out but now I want to find the leak.
With the carpet (and sub-mats) removed and after some snow melted I detected a small amount of water in the extreme front right passenger footwell - near the computer. My wife poured a lot of water on the windshield, around the base of the A-pillar, on the side window and into the cowl grille at the rear of the hood while I looked under the partially disassembled dash. But all this produced only a few drops.
The windshield was replaced before I bought the car so that makes me suspicious. Also, I've heard that there are drain tubes for the sunroof that run down the pillars. I didn't know this at the time so did not pour water on the sunroof.
Has anyone had and successfully solved a similar problem?
Thanks.
Bob

Have you looked at the sunroof for leaks? I know that that is usually the first place that a 700 starts leaking from. The weatherstripping starts to get old.

Sunroof has 4 drains. Blow em out w compressed air or may require a length of flex wire to clear them. Even if gasket is leaking, most H20 should go into sunroof pan and drain.

Keeping the four corner drains clear is the main thing to watch, but you also have to realize that the sunroof is not a watertight seal. The drains can handle only a certain amount of water without overflowing the collector tray. If you're in any kind of monsoon (or a light mist as we call it out here in the Pacific Northwest) and the roof panel is slightly ajar (partly open or misaligned), the felt strip is shot or if the car is parked on a steep slope, then water may overflow into the passenger compartment. Sunroof panels can be re-aligned if needed, but the procedure sounds like a real PITA, second only to replacing heater fans. Replace the felt strips if they disintegerate.

There is a 4" x 6" plastic plug in a hole in the right kick panel. The gasket behind it was out of place on my 740. Also, the air intake for the air conditioner in front of the windshield leaked. Take out the grill, open up the cover over the air intake and reposition the gasket and use copious amounts of RTV.
