Any have opinions about how well SAABs stand up to Volvos in terms
of reliability and functionality? Is there are long standing
rivarlry between these co.s, or are they birds of a feather...
I'm still thinking about buying an 850...but I found a nice 9000 I'm
considering.
I don't know much about either...but I always like to stir up a good argument.

Since GM Bought SAAB, and this is the last year for the present body/engine combo-don't know what to say except Thank God GM didn't put a QUAD 4 in them!
Thought they were all built in Finland!

Only use I have for Saab is to take a leak behing it....Yes - it's Chevy vs.Ford in Sweden, exept that both are better than Saab...Only Saab Convertibles are made in Finland. The very same factory is now making new Porsche Boxers. But, Please, No More Saabs here! PS. Just saw FBI nationwide list; Saab is the least likely to be stolen! They don't find the damn ingition on the floor?!

What the hell is up with the stupid key on the floor?
I would not buy a car with the key on the floor. I also hate FWD cars, torque steer is a real bite. Since this is a Volvo board the mass concensious would be the Volvo.

I bet they are an ok car..Couple of friends (from the local rowing club, no less) survived various crashes in the early '90's (both instances which come
to mind were other people's fault). You can roof rack a canoe or shell on top, but probably not a lot of heavy lumber or plywood.
Saab (no relation to those wonderful Norwegian Sabb boat diesels) kind of missed the station wagon market. All you can with them is drive to the grocery store or to (sorry) your job at the law firm, a task eminently more suited to a well-maintained bicycle.
IMHO, who needs that four-letter automotive acronym anyway.
Happy tinkering, fellow plebian.

I guess that you would get strange looks as you drive the SAAB into a GM dealersip to get repairs and parts for it! I thought that GM already had Adam "Opel" as their European market car? I guess one sub company is not enough ah!

Bryan,
If you ever plan to do any of your own work I wouldn't recommend getting a Saab. My niece had an '85, 900 and I worked on it a few times. What a nightmare. I don't know where their engineers went to school. There must be a "Saab U". Ask anyone how long it takes to change the water pump, or even the belt that drives it. You can't even see it. I beleive it would be easier to pull the engine. It took me about an hour to change the air filter the first time. The engine is installed reversed for some reason. All the things that normally need service are about 1" from the firewall. She was constantly twisting off the ignition keys. Coke or coffee spilled in the ignition switch doesn't make it turn very easy, espically in the cold weather when the suggar gets hard and sticky. I can't remember all the other things (and there were many) that happpened but it was enough to convinced me that I would never touch one again.
Take my (and others) advice, stick with Volvo.
Tom
