Best Turbo for swap ?[ALL/1998] posted by Topi on

Those who know late model Turbos('89 & up), can you help? 1. Which engine/Fuel management would the easiest to use for a swap? 2. Which ECU has both, fuel and ignition, in the same box? 3. Which model has separate engine/ECU wiring harness? 4. In Sweden they race 850 Turbo 5-cyl on 240 RWD configuration. Is there a bellhousing for that? With your help my '67 Volvoville Convertible will get a bit faster ! Thanks!

Maybe this'll help:
The B230FT/ET found in the 7/9 series cars has the electronic LH
injection, the most displacment, intercooler, etc. Check out the
turbobricks site for more info on which engines came in what
(http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/4242/).
The 850 Turbo engine (B5234T) requires a different transmission, as
I believe it uses a different output shaft and bolt pattern. The 960
shares this bolt pattern, so you could bolt up the B5234 to one of
those. If you want a stick, you'll have to import a M90 from
Europe to bolt it up.. which is probably what they did over there.
.. when you said "Volvoville Convertable", are you referring to one
of the 1800 model convertables that were commissioned by the
Volvoville Dealership? If so, I'd look into selling it and _buying_
yourself a nice turbo - those cars are worth far more in the shape
they're in.

Thanks! Now I know how Swedes are racing 240s with 5-cylinder Turbos. That was a big help. Interesting possibilities: 960 straight six into a 850 ! Why not, if the bellhousing pattern is the same! M90 tranny seems to have good ratios, too. I've never seen one but may be able to import one. "Turbobricks" page is a good one but doesn't tell much about modern EFI turbo cars and if FI & ignition systems are in the same box. Most Volvo ECUs are bad; FI and Ignition are separated with a terrible wiring harness mess. I will avoid this. I'll look into 900 serie cars. Finally, I'm not thinking to make money on my Volvoville. Car's is so badly built and engineered I can only make it better!
