88 740 GLE Brakes[ALL/1998] posted by Arrwin on

Hey everyone,
I own an 88 740GLE and I have a problem with the front brakes. I had the rotors changed about a year ago and since then they've been getting warped about every 3 to 4 months. When that happens, it wears out my pads, so then I would have to replace the pads and the rotors. I did have the driver side caliper replaced after getting the new rotors. Could it of been a bad rotor or bad caliper? Can anyone help? Thanks.

I am not aware of a way that a bad caliper can cause rotor warping. My first suspicion is over-tightening of the lug nuts/bolts. This can easily cause excess rotor run-out that would ultimately result in warping. Make sure that the nuts/bolts are tightened to Volvo spec.

It is critical on cars with detachable rotors (hubs stay, rotors come off) that the hub face is clean and that the rotor is installed where the runout is lowest. Your hub will have some side-to-side runout and the rotor will have the same. If you install the rotor and check the runout, then remove it, move it one lug position, and then recheck runout. Do this until you find the position that yields the least side-to-side runout. When this is not done many cars (Volvo 700/900 series being one of these) will transmit the wobble of the rotor when brakes are applied to the steering system. This may not happen at first as the rotors will wear more in spots during light braking and then the irregular rotors will cause this steering shake.

Abe,
Thanks for your advice on the 740 brakes.
