Auto Transmission Problem. 1986 245[ALL/1998] posted by Alexander Mourzenko on

I am considering to purchase next Volvo. I think, I found one. But during the test-drive I found out that transmission shifts only to the second gear up, no third or O/D.
The dealer said it is due to the low fluid level and they can fix it.
Is it really possible to fix such a problem? Should I expect to visit tranny shop soon, if I buy this car as is?
245DL 1986, 170000 miles. Engine and suspension are very good, the rest (except transmission) I can fix on my own.
Thanks for any advise.
A Mourzenko

Rest assured if it was only low fluid level, they would have added fluid before you drove the car. Normally this problem is due to a stuck kick down cable, but the sky is the limit on guessing transmission problems.

This is a wild guess for your 4 th gear (overdrive on the automatic).
Ensure the overdrive relay works. If it doesn't, the overdrive
light should be on on the dash. HOWEVER, If the bulb is burned out
for the indicator you would never know it's the relay nad not the

If they said that to me I'd ask for a written 100 percent guarantee parts and labor on that transmission for 10,000 miles.
I agree that if it was only low fluid they would have had it filled before they let you drive it.
If you buy that car they should throw in a snow shovel for free:>).

I recently had to replace the tranny on my 1990 740GL. The car had about 150,000 mi. on it and exhibited the same symptoms you describe. The tranmission would not shift into 3rd or OD. I thought that it was the fluid so I replaced it. No change. The used transmission cost me $600 from Revolvo plus labor. A rebuild from Volvo was going to be about $2000 with labor. I would look for another car to buy.

Thanks to everybody.
I do not really want to buy additional troubles.
But it seems to me impossible to find (at least in Massachusetts) 245 Volvo with good engine, transmission, suspension and not rotten body.
