Troubleshooting Turbo System[ALL/1998] posted by Michael McBroom on

I've had this '87 745T for about a month now, and have had a lot of fun with it, but over the past couple of days I've noticed that the acceleration just doesn't seem to be there like it did before. It's not slow per se, but there's no invisible hand on my chest anymore when I give it a bit of throttle.

I can hear the turbo when I'm driving next to a sound-reflective wall or similar surface, so I know it's spooling up. And the boost gauge works the same as always. What should I look for that's most likely to come loose or break...besides the turbo itself, that is?

It is common for the turbo plumbing to develop holes in it. Oil will soften and the hot air will burn the soft hoses. Seems like these holes always develop on the bottom side of these hoses, I guess because this is where the oil accumulates. Check all the rubber hoses along their bottom edges. Squeeze them and try to poke your finger in through them. The oil vapor is normal (to an extent) and these hoses will eventually burn through.
