Anyone have advice on getting my 740 intercooler wagon to shift a little more smoothly into 2nd gear?

Shifting problems w/ 2nd gear could be as simple as an adjustment to your shift cable(the cable at your throttle cable spool assembly that wraps from the bottom--clockwise). This cable can be loosened by slacking off the nuts and decreasing the thread count between thenut on the left and the end of the housing from which cable emerges. If this doesn't fix it then there is a malady that affects certain AISIN-WARNER gearboxes used in Toyotas and Volvos where a hard rubber check ball that is there to prevent back flow of fluid during the second gear change that can fragment and must be replaced. If the cable adjustment doesn't do it then find yourself a good dealer familiar with this problem or a good trans shop with experience with Toyota and Volvo gearboxes that can fix Valve bodies. This repair DOES NOT require rebuild of the gear box and that will not fix the problem. P.S. this could also be caused by a defective seal on an accumulator piston, though that has not been a problem w/ this trans.

I think Jim is probably correct with the "kickdown" cable adjustment. The turbos seem to be more sensitive to a "too tight" cable affecting shift quality. This can also show up as shifting at a high engine rpm even though there is a light throttle application. The kickdown cable goes from the throttle around the back of the cylinder head to the transmission. You should be able to pull the exposed portion of the cable (at the throttle end) sideways and release it and hear a light "click" from the transmission when it is adjusted correctly. This is the "throttle valve" inside the valve body snapping shut. If it doesn't click, it may be adjusted too tightly.

Haven't seen too many internal trans problems causing this symptom in the AW's (but Jim has more experience than I).

I had this problem in my '86 Volvo 740. It was shifting very hard when I bought it (only 60 000 miles in the clock).

It was the "worn rubber ball in the valve body"-problem. The transmission has worked fine ever since the ball was replaced. The cost was about $200 (two hours of labour, $4 rubber ball, new gaskets and 7 liters of Dexron III).

See my page (I'm sorry, I don't have the picture).
