850 Turbo rear rotors[ALL/1998] posted by Paul Elliott on

I think my rear rotor(s) may be warped. At 70 mph and above, there is a slight roughness feel in the pedal, but since the steering wheel is calm, I'm guessing rear. Or course since below 70, the pedal is calm also, maybe its nothing. But if the runout exeeds spec, I'll want to replace them. In the Volvo manual, and in Haines, they talk about a 'brake pipe' in conjunciton with the replacement of rear rotors. What and where is this 'brake pipe'?? Since the car has only 14,000 miles, I may get lucky by getting the Dealer to honor the warranty, which normally covers rotor warpage. But since I replaced the stock pads with Repco Deluxe pads from IPD 500 miles ago, they may try and blame the pads. Since the pads are asbestos content organics, they should be easier on the rotors than the stock semi metallics so any such claim would probably not be grounded in fact. But that's not likely to stop them, right? I can get rear rotors from IPD for about $48 each, but I'm concerned about this brake 'pipe', and am also concerned about any complication which may be caused by the parking brake cable/drum adjustment screw.

I think brake pipe = brake line.

Well today is the day,

I have my 850 (1995) at the dealership to have the rear brakes checked. I has a vibration that can be felt heard at higher speeds. I took the pads out(still original) and they were way from worn, I mean they were almost like new. I could not tell if the rotor was warped but from all the people mail here sounds they are. I expect this to be under warranty but we shall see later today.

I will let everybody know about the results.

Nick

Nick, I took my '95 850 turbo to my dealer on Tuesday, for a 2 yr renewal of the brake fluid, and for a check of the lateral runout of my rotors, to see if they have been contributing to the pedal vibration felt at hi speeds. My hunch since the steering wheel was not involved, was that the rear rotors were at fault. Sure enough, the dealer replaced them both, and the pedal again is smooth as silk. It seems that even thought the fronts peform 2/3 of the braking, the rears since they are solid, do tend to warp on these 850s. There was no charge on this repair, since at Volvo, unlike some other companies, warpage is NOT considered wear and tear.
