Leaky Heater Core (?) 1986 745T[ALL/1998] posted by Steve Lanich on

Symptoms are 1)antifreeze dripping from under dash heater vents; 2) antifreeze vapor sometimes escaping from dash vents; and 3) front carpets soaked with antifreeze. The dripping and vapor stop when the heat control is all the way off.

So far all I have done is remove the carpets, which probably will have to be replaced.

Questions: Could it be anything *but* the heater core, or should I just prepare myself for the worst? What am I looking at in terms of repair costs (not at a dealer, at a $50/hr shop)? Can the cores be repaired by a competent radiator shop? Is this more difficult or less difficult than removing the blower motor in a 240?

Thanks.

I've never replaced one in a 700 series so I can't say how it compares to a 240 blower motor. Sounds like it is the heater core. BUT, I had one which was leaking at the hose where it connects to the core. It would squirt into the passenger compartment (all of maybe 1/4 inch) and soak the carpet giving typical heater core symptoms (anti-freeze smell also). Keep us posted.
