brakes/throttle body/jacking question for 850 [ALL/1998] posted by Nick Gidakos on

Hi everybody,

I just bought my haynes (from the UK) manual for my 95 850 Station Wagon. I was planning to do the rear brakes and the throttle body clean up. I have few questions. Before I start taking thing apart I was reading the manual and I cannot find anywhere that says how to clean the throttle body. I thing I have found the section about taking the throttle body off but I was not sure. Any body with a simmilar manual shed some light where should I look(maybe page and section- I would imagine it would be the same). Now brakes questions. The manual describes how take the rear rotors off and after removing the caliper and the shoes states remove the pin that is used to make sure that the whell goes the same way. It also has a picture they are using an allen wrench to take it off. Well I took the whell of my Volvo and the pin on the disc seems to have no bolt or any other screwing device. Before I take the brake pads off I want to make sure that the disc will come off.(I have to resurface them because I have the famous warped rotors). Any suggestions from people will be appreciated. The final question is about jacking the car up and where to put jack stands. Haynes says just in the front of the rear suspension. Well there are several places that I looked. I do not really want to bend something. How about the place just in front of the rear wheel well and towards the center (maybe 2-5 inches inside. When I took my car to MIDAS brake shop the put their lifting bars there. (I know they are pro with that but I am a little confused). Any help will be greatlly appreciated.

Nick

Nick, Near the back of my Haynes Manual , there is a section entitled REF 5 that talks about jacking the car. It is after the wiring diagrams

The rear lift point for service is the attaching point for the rear suspension that is directly in front of each rear wheel, it is a large bolt. If your car has less than 50k miles it is still covered by a warranty for rotor warpage that is void if you turn rotors. As for throttle cleaning it is best to wet a cloth with spray carb cleaner and wipe the housing with the throttle held open with the air hose from air cleaner removed. This will ensure that nothing is disturbed with the throttle adjustments that could create more problems than your soiled throttle housing could ever cause. The pins for the rear pads drive out to the inside(towards center of car) and can be reinstalled byuse of a pair of channel lock type pliars to press them back in the way they came out.

Hi Abe,

Is that true Rotor Warpage is covered under warranty?

I am going to my Volvo dealer ship to see what they say about it.

Any body had that procedure done under warranty?

By the way Abe my car has 27,000 miles on it and it is still under 4/50K warranty(it includes warped rotors?)

Thanks for info.

PS: I did find the jack points and the brake pads are not worn much. I will talk to my dealer.

Abe, on your point about rotor warpage and it being covered, On my 850 Turbo with 14,000 miles, I replaced my stock pads with Repco Deluxe (asbestos content) pads a few months ago to eliminate the hi dust problem with the stocks. Street behavior and stopping is excellent with no visible dust. I've noticed however that recently, at 70 mph and higer ONLY, I can feel a slight roughness in the pedal. But below 70 mph, its still smooth as silk. Never having had rotor warpage or wobble that I know of, is this a simptom of this condition? Or is it usually found below 70 mph as well? If it IS warpage, since I meticulously hand torque my lug bolts to 82 ft lbs, and noone else touches them, what could have caused it? Since it seems mild, can I leave as is, or do I need to determine which, if any, rotor has run out, and get it replaced? And if so, do I need to replace the pads again, even though I just did it? Thanks for your answers.

Abe, re cleaning the throttle body, my 850 turbo has 14,000 miles. Is this a service which needs to be performed at specific intervals (have not seen it in the literature) or to correct a condition? Will regular use of an injector cleaner in the fuel tank prevent the need for this service? Thank you.

This is actually a response to an inquiry back from the original poster of this mesage--I got some message as to how it didn't get transmitted when I sent it the first time so this is the only way I knew how to retransmit it----- The warranty on your car covers rotors for warpage but not for wear below the minimum limit. If you turn the rotors it usually puts the rotors just above this min limit and when the warpage returns(which it usually does when you turn them and reduce their thickness-- this rotor turning thing is much much overused when pads are replaced) and at that time the rotors are not warrantable. Also you have a front set of proper lift points that is located just inside the rear edge of the front tire on the large bolt that holds the front subframe-- this bolt is on a triangle shaped plate held by two othe smaller bolts.

Hope this helps you.
