S90[ALL/1998] posted by Ed James on

Hello, My wife and I are considering purchasing our first Volvo. We are very interested in the new S90. We recently went to our local dealership and of course got the regular "sales" routine. I have been doing some research on the Internet about the car and ran across some things of interest. One of which is the 20K timing belt problem and some others that owners are experiencing. Could anyone that has some extra time please e-mail us and just let us know some of the "unbiased" pros and cons of the automobile (i.e., service, comfort, safety etc.) We were not impressed at all by the BMW and are not quite ready to spend the extra money for a Mercedes. The new Volvo seems to fit, but thought we could find some help here. Thanks in advance, Ed

Certainly check the owners manual of the new S90, but from what Mark Klein offered in a previous thread (see his listing under 960 timing belt thread), it might be that the new ones are close to 50,000 interval changes.

Yes, the newer ones have a higher service interval for the timing belt. The rest of the car is basically a 960 with different cosmetics. Basically a proven package. There are a few "common occurances" such as rotor warpage on cars which are driven agressively, and the door panel material rippling at the corners, but these are really 960 "occurances" and may very well be adressed on the S90. Any of these things are covered under factory warranty. Normally Volvo will take measures as soon as reasonably possible in dealing with this type of thing. If for no other reason, to save themselves the money paid to warranty claims. Volvo continues to have among the best warranty in the industry.

For your information, the 960/S90 from -95 year model has an inteval for changing the time belt of 120.000 km, which is equivalent to 75.000 miles. Mark Klein is right, the S90 is more or less the same car as the 960, just with some cosmetic changes, very small though.

The timing belt deal you mention has never been an affliction of the 850 predecessor to the model you are interested in. The service interval for the t. belt on an s70 is 70k miles. I have a v70 t-5 that I've put 5300 miles on and I think it is terrific! This car has a proven chassis and is an updated 850 at heart and that car has been on the road in the U.S. since 1993 and has been giving good service with few problems that mostly were limited to the first year (1993) cars. Typical new model minor annoyances like squeaks that my 1998 v70 has none of though I live down an especially nasty gravel paved road I recommend this car highly nad think you will be pleased with it from a service standpoint and certainly from a safety standpoint.
