PV544 Lumber Wagon[ALL/1998] posted by John on

My 544 rides like a lumber wagon. I would think that with tired springs and shocks the ride would get real mushy and wallowy. I've got the tire pressure set at 24 psi in front and 28 in back. The manual says 21 and 24, but that seems pretty low. Would new springs help?

What do you mean, "lumber wagon"? 544s in general are fairly stiffly suspended, and the springs don't seem to get tired as they age. I suspect, however, that the dreaded P.O. has installed cheap aftermarket shocks which cross reference to a '56 F-100 pickup; they happen to be the right length, but the ride would be better with about 750 lbs.[a dozen or so sheets of plywood] in the trunk. I would recommend KYB gas shocks. You don't say what tires you have, but with 165x15 radials, I've used 32 psi front and rear with good results. The low values in the manual are for bias tires.
