Wheel brush[ALL/1998] posted by Shatz on

In one of my response of late, I referred to a wheel brush that is slicker than snot in removing grime fro thos precious Volvo aluminum wheels. It is a conical, spiral design that gets in to the pesky little areas in those multi-spoke wheels, like the 240 and 960 series. The bristles are a semi-stiff nylon with polished ends.
It cam from one of those sheeshee catalogues, Harrington's, for about $20. So far it's worked well with a minimum of strong soap to loosen the brake dust and road grime. The similar car brush, (looks like a floor broom) however, is not worth it. I stick to a large natural sponge, but would like to locate one of the lambswool mitts that some of the carwash center use. Looks like they would work well, too. Any experience/comments folks?

Shatz, I use a baby bottle brush chucked up in a CORDLESS drill and 409 to clean the wheels on my 960. Be sure to use a cordless drill if you try this or you could end up looking as sooty as your wheels. For the leather I usually use plain water (damp rag). If it needs more serious cleaning I rub a wee bit of ivory soap on the damp rag and wipe dry. I have not tried any special leather products and am a little afraid to. Volvo says use mild toilet soap. I think something may be getting lost in the translation. Robert

Yikes, That's a great combo of lo and high tech. I'd think you'd end up somewhat speckled after revving the drill up once or twice. My cordless does have a low rpm setting. That might help I guess. I'll locate a bottle brush here at the hospital, since our baby bottle brushes are long gone. Come to think of it, we never had any. Used those nifty platex nursers with the dispoable fillers. Anyway, I digress...

I bought a wheel brush but the bristles proved to thin for the 960 front(factory)brake dust. I spray them with Fantastik first then use a rag.
Is the dust from replacement pad less of a problem? Thanks

Absolutely the pads make a world of difference. Try some IPD pads and you'll use a lot less Fantastic...
