Can someone tell me what engine my 1994 960 has? What other year 960's have the same engine?
We love our 960 and have had only minor problems. Is changing brake pads on them difficult and what special tools are needed?
The brake dust from the factory pads is pitting up the wheels. I clean them as often as I can. Fronts are the worst as they do most of the work. Thanks
JH

I cannot remember the nominclature of the engine, but I believe the 94 is the same as the original 92 engine, with(209?) HP. The engine did not change until 95 when the horsepower was decereased somewhat to less than 200HP, and fuel milage improved slightly as I understand it. You'll probably get accurate information from someone who actually knows what they 're talking about...
I had a pair of Bendix put on my fronts and they are just fine. I had actualy bought the IPDs since they have done very well on my 240s, but the shop missed the box of new pads I had in the car. Consequently he only charged me for what I paid for the IPDs, instead of taking the Bendix pads off. Regardless, either will save the front wheel from dust and apparently pitting. I've not attempted any maintenance on my car yet. No space in the city to work!
Also am wondering, assuming we have the same engine, what kind of gas milage you are getting. I drive mostly dowtown Baltimore and I get no more than 15 mpg, and around 25 on the highway; cruise set at 72mph. Barely moving in this sweet thing.
By the way, I found a clever wheel brush from one of the zillion catalogues I get. It is a semi-stiff conical spiral brush made of nylon or polyester bristles, rounded at the ends. It really gets between those multiple spokes in a hurry. A sort of toothbrush for wheels. Can't remember the catalogue name, but I'll post it.

You have the Volvo constructed (built in Sweden) inline six cylinder 3,o litres engine in this car, 204 HP in the Swedish version (I don't know if the HP differs in the american version). This engine came with the first 960 model, which replaced the 760. (The 760 had a V6 engine of French origin.)
The 960 was made only with this engine up to and including the -94 years model.
From the -95 model, Volvo offered two versions of this engine: 3,o litres with 204 HP and 2,5 litres with 170 HP. The smaller engine was supposed to be more economic, but in real life it turned out to consume more gas than the bigger engine, though cheaper to buy. Therefore, this engine will be replaced from -97 by a 3,o litres version with 180 HP. I am not sure that the smaller engine is or was at all available in the US.
The 5-cyl 850/V70 engine and the 6-cyl 960/S90 engine, and a 4-cyl engine for some markets, are all basicly the same construction of engine, just with various number of cylinders. It's a clean Volvo construction, and the engines are built in Sweden, some 130 km outside Gothenburg.
As to cars, do you know that boys never grow up? It's just their toys getting more and more expensive over the years........:-)

All 960s have the B6304 engine (US models anyway).
Brake pads on the 960 are no harder to change than any other car and easier than a lot. No special tools required.

the engine in your 1994 960 is basically the same as in all 960's but there are differences. 92-93 have 21 mm timing belts 201 HP 94 have 23mm t.belts 201 HP 95 and up have 28mm t. belts 181 HP but more low end torque The 92-94 engines are the same except for differences in timing belt drive pieces (exhaust cam gear dampers and tensioning idler) The 1995 and up engines have a much wider belt and all the timing belt related pieces and accessory (a/c, pwr strg. alternator) had to be modified to make room for the wide t. belt. the fuel system changed for 96 and this makes for some minor changes to pieces related to EFI. Hope this answers your motor questions.
