Are you sure that the 960series has a flame trap?
I recently had a 30K tune-up done on it, and there was no mention of the flametrap. I trust the mechanic who did it.

Shatz, Its there. I think Volvo reccomends servicing it every 60K, but since its easy to get to, I think its best to clean it up every 10K. Its plastic and has fairly large holes just like the newer 4cyl. and the new replacement parts. Robert

That's good to know. But now I can't find the thread that I thought explained how to find it on the 960! Could you help me out. I will clean it forthwith... Thanks

Shatz, Follow the air intake hose from the air cleaner back towards the engine. Where the intake hose (approx 4inch diameter) turns down towards the throttle you will see another hose (approx 1 inch diameter) join it. Grab the plastic elbow that joins these 2 hoses and twist it approx. 1/4 inch counter clockwise then pull it out. You will see the flame trap in the end of the elbow.
While I have you on the line, let you respond to some of your previous 960 experiences. I hope I have the right 960 owner. Your tailgate supports sounds like they are working as designed. Their purpose is to counteract the weight of the heavy tailgate making it easy to open with a reasonable amount of effort. Also, it is to allow the door to be closed with a reasonable effort. The main purpose is to keep the heavy door from coming down on your tender noggin. (head)
Your starting problem is something that I am interested in knowing more details about. I have been seeing a condition (not only on Volvo) that I suspect is being caused by fuel. A condition can exist where excessive amounts of flaky carbon builds up in the combustion chamber. Certain conditions such as you described seem to allow this carbon to break loose and keep the valves from sealing properly. This can cause a no start condition due to low compression and would also cause the spark plugs to be fue l fouled. I think the best medicine for this is to drive the hell of the car every now and then. This engine was originally designed for higher RPM's and seems to perform best if you purge it of the effects of city driving.

Yes, I did want to know wher ethat little bugger flame trap was located on the 960, but the other concerns were from someone else. Thanks.
