engine revving[ALL/1998] posted by Shobhan Mondal on

hi folks,
This is my first mail to this group. I own a 90 740 turbo wagon. This car is great to drive when it doesnot have problems, but unfortunately it has had its share of problems and left me a little poorer while making the dealer rich. Anyway, I finally decided to some of the repairs myself. My latest problem is that one day I noticed that the engine revved up while waiting at a traffic light. The problem disappeared until yesterday. It seems to last only for a few seconds - the check engine sign lights up. There seems no apparent problem while it's running.
Any help to diagnose this problem will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks. shobhan.

Shoban, The ck engine light may be the clue. Ck for fault codes. Hopefully there will be a code to point you in the right direction. Some possible causes are a misadjusted throttle or idle switch. A bad idle air control valve, or an intermittant open circuit in the engine coolant temperature sensor. This is probably not a good do it yourself project. You probably should visit the dealer on this one. Robert

I agree with Robert about the throttle. It may be nothing more than carbon built up around the throttle plate. But you should check the codes, which is easy on your car. If you should decide to get it fixed by a pro, I would suggest avoiding the dealer. There are plenty of competent specialists in fuel injection (and Volvos in general) who have prices much cheaper than the dealers.---Brian

hi folks,
The car died ! - took it a local garage where the owner lets me use his facility and helps me out with repairs. Anway, under the hood, check for faultcode - 2-1-4, engine RPM sensor faulty( Chilton's manual).Removed the conections for sundry sensors and put them back and while I was there changed the fuel filter - badly needed to be changed and the distributor and rotor. The problem seems to have gone for the time being. Do I really have to change the engine rpm sensor? where can I buy such a thing and can I do it myself?
Next weekend I will change the thermostat and spark plugs.
Thanks Brian and Robert. shobhan

Shobhan The engine speed sensor could set that code and could cause the car to die. I can not imagine any way it could cause the engine to rev . If you want to do some work your self this would be a good project, if you have a 10mm socket and long extension. 1 bolt holds it in. The part cost $40 - $50 from Volvo I think. Call your local dealer with your cars VIN. There was a service campain on speed sensors for a couple year models, but even a good sensor will fail eventually. I don't think it will fix your original problem but it's a good preventative measure to keep you from walking.
