1977 B21 engine revving problems[ALL/1998] posted by Gilbert Kirk on

This could be a lengthy post, but I'll try to keep it short. I'm new to this site, so forgive me if this has already been covered. I've got a B21 engine from a 1977 SW in the body of a 1980 GLE. It had been running fine for ~2 yrs. I even used the GLE's fuel delivery components. One day, the engine started giving me this bogging down sound and it wouldn't go any faster than 60 mph. Eventually (over several weeks' time) it started getting slower and slower. If I pushed the accelerator pedal, it would make a WAH sound, but wouldn't go any faster. Finally, it died. I was able to limp it in to the dealership and 5 different mechanics had to scratch their collective heads as to why it wouldn't start again. They replaced the timing belt (the old one was only 1-1/2 y.o.) but that didn't help. That was two years ago. I have since rebuilt the engine and am now trying to get it to go again. The best I've been able to do is 50 mph - just fast enough to test the OD (which works). It still does the WAH sound if I try and rev any higher than 4000 rpm. And it will die if I try this too much. The only thing it does reliably is idle. And it takes alot of work to get to that stage. So - is it my exhausst system or distriobutor (about the onl things I haven't replaced. And does anybody know where I can get a good vacuum hose schematic? Gilbert Kirk guest@aru.dom.uab.edu

Check your exhaust system for obstructions. I had my catalytic converter crap out one time and the symptoms of bogginess were the same as you're experiencing now.

James - Thanks for the suggestion. I really haven't explored the exhaust side of the car much. I just sent a question, essentially of the same nature, to Tom & Ray Magliozzi (sp?) of Klick 'n Klack fame. I'll try anything in this search! Gilbert
