Newman's New Enterprise

Paul Newman ia adding cars to his sales empire of popcorn, salad dressing and pasta sauce.

But Mr. Newman, an avid race car driver who lives in Westport, Conn., does not intend to donate this business's profits to charity as he does with his "Newman's Own" foods.

The 72 year old movie star is teaming up with friends Michael Brockman and David J. Long to buy the Volvo City/Milford Mazda/Enterprise Oldsmobile dealership, Mr. Newman's lawyer, Leo Nevas said Tuesday. The dealership had been under bankruptcy protection since 1995. -----------------------------------------------------------------Maybe Paul will be racing a C70/V70/S70 soon! At least he has good taste in cars! Stoney

I think Rolling Magazine had a picture of one of Paul's cars (740 w/V-8?) in it. I'm not sure of the issue, but I'll look it up. I guess Letterman also has a stealth Volvo. I really enjoyed your oil gauge instructions - you should consider writing the definitive Volvo manual - sort of like the Muir publication "How to keep your Volkswagon Alive."

Bob, Paul used to have a VW bug with a Porsche 6 cylinder engine in the back. It had no back seat just a nondescript carpet covered hump, and I hear he used to race for pink slips in Mulholland Drive in LA. Imagine getting your doors blown in by a bug! Mercy!

My wife used to hang around the SCCA circuit back in the 70's and she was working the safety inpection crew on a race at "the Rock" and she had to DQ Newman 'cause of a problem with the fire extinguisher. She said he was a real gentleman about it an after the race he stopped by the safety pit with a case of St. Pauli Girl for the race crew. That's class! Stoney

The only notable race experience I had was at Watkins Glen. I was on the security crew back in 1978 when they still had the big races there. And the Glen's notorious bog that ate buses and cars was still intact then. I made the mistake of stopping Colin Chapman to check his ID at the pit entrance. I swear I didn't know who he was and never heard the end of it from my friends at the Glen. No Volvos racing at the Glen back then - just grand prix stuff. I spent a couple years at Rochester Institute of Tec, that's how I got on the crew - the Glen race security chief had a 1800es and knew me from RIT! Not what you know, but who you know! Volvos forever, chevys never!
