I seem to need new brake pads nearly every 10,000 miles. My local dealer/service shop, whom I have found trustworthy over the last 10 years, tells me that the reason for this relates to the fact that asbestos is no longer in use for brake pads and that the newer materials in use are just not as durable. He also admitted that the wear is also a basic design flaw in the brake system. I feel that I am not being abused by the shop due to their record of being quick to tell me when I need new pads on only 2 wheels rather than 4, or that I can wait another 5K miles before I make the change.
Another brake problem is that I get an uneven pressure on the brake pedal when braking. It feels as if a disk might be misshaped or out of alignment.
Appreciate any info on these subjects. For the record, we have a meager 67,000 miles on the car. We have gone for all scheduled Volvo maintenance and overall we have been extremely satisfied.
Just put a down payment on a new S70 for our second car. I can hardly wait to get it, despite the impending hole in my wallet.
Thanks.

Bob, I get a lot more than 10K per set/half set of pads and I drive like an A-10 warthog pilot so there's something screwey with your garage. Sounds like you've got warped rotors either front or rear (most likely front). If it feels like you have anti-lock brakes when you don't IE: Hit the pedal and feel deep down pulse-pulse-pulse then you have one or two warped rotors. Go to a good brake shop and have them pull the wheels and check the run out on rotors. They MAY be able to turn them true with a lathe but no promises. Sounds like you drive with heavy foot and mucho brake pedal so look into having new rotors cross drilled to dissapate the excess heat. Also check/find out why the front brakes are heating up so much, is there a problem with venting? (If you use a product called kleen Wheels take it off any throw it away-it is a disc that is put on between hub/rotor assembly and wheel as a "barrier" against brake pad dust build up but has warped more rotors than Peter Gregg).
! Find a new shop and have 'em check the rotors that's primary and find out what pads you have been using and try PBR/Repco pads. Stoney
