My 82 240 has an auto transmission. The overdrive is switching on and off at random. I've replaced the fuse, the switch on the gear shift and the relay in the dash, no luck. Suppose it must be the solenoid...Wanted to get a second opinion from my fellow Volvo owners.

Dave, Did you check continuity of wiring between shifter switch, relay and solenoid in AT? Also check ground for this circuit. Check electrical connection at AT solenoid switch for short and intermittent signal. Also check condition of Fuse # 3 and clean contacts for it. This is OD Fuse. Stoney

If your car is dropping out of OD randomly, and the light in the dash isn't comming on ("OD off") when this occurs, then you can be pretty sure its the solenoid.

This is so stupid a suggestion as to warrant mentioning for fear of oversight. Check the transmission fluid condition as well as level. Problems in this area seem to appear first as o'drive trouble.

I had a similar problem with '82 240. The transmission fluid was low which caused problems engaging and staying enaged. Later on it would engage intermittently then disengage for no apparent reason. I found that one of the wires inside shifter had the insulation rubbed off. Since these wires run up next to the reverse pullup, I'm assuming over time this wore through the insulation. This was a b**ch to fix and required taking the shift lever off and resnaking the repaired wires up and reconnecting them to the O/D switch.

Rollin, A low fluid level can cause the AW 70 to slip gears and "hunt" when shifting. I had a similar problem on my 82 245DL w/ an AW70 and did all the stuff you hae done and the final thing was to have a reseal kit installed. The transmission shop charged $300 including the kit and the tech let me watch as he did the dissassembly. We discovered that 1/2 the seal were in MARGINAL condition and two were shot causing a constant by small fluid leak. After the reseal and change of fluid the puppy ran like a deer and I never had a shifting problem even in the middle of a Syracuse, NY winter blizzard.
