1996 850t cool down, etc.[ALL/1998] posted by Bear Files on

This is a great site! The fastest I’ve visited.
My question is about my second Volvo, a 96 850 turbo sedan: How long should I wait to turn the engine off? I’ve been told that turning the engine off right away after parking can “cook the turbo”. Is this true? Am I wasting my time by sitting in the car for 15 to 30 seconds with the engine idling?

Bear, If you feel like setting fire to $1500 or so shut the engine down and don't let it idle. You need to let it idle at least 5 min aftera good turbo run to llow the oil to recoat the bearings and wick away any residual heat. Also the coolant is still circulating and sucking away heat so the more you idle the longer the turbo's lifetime. I found a place in Australia that makes a timer that will control the turbo cool down time so you can automate the process. The link is below. Stoney

I owned a '96 850 Turbo. The dealer asked me to let the engine idle for at least 1 minute before shuting the engine. This is a lot of trouble but I don't want to wreck the turbo charger.
I was wondering if I can get some kind of a timer to automate the process for me. I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Anyone knows a good place to purchace and install the timer?
My friends' Audi and Toyota MR2 Turbo has a built-in auto-timer for the turbo. The cooler keeps running after the driver has shut off the ignition. Is Volvo gonna implement this in the future Turbo models?
Thanks for your advice in advance!

You only have to warm the turbo down if the turbo is hot. If you sit at three stop lights before you pull into your drivway then its already had a chance to cool down. The real killer is when you pull off the highway to get gas. This is the kind of situation where a cool down is a good idea.
