Change Radio on 764.[ALL/1998] posted by Henry T. Mui. on

I'm in the process of purchasing a 85' 764 GLE with a 4 cylinder engine in it. Down the road I wanted to change the Volvo original radio. I wanted to put in a new AM/FM radio cassette (Sony) add a 10 disk changer (Sony). Will I have to make a new plastic face plate to hold the radio unit? Will the old face plate fit the sony unit? If not what changes am I in store for? I don't want to an expert radio shop to have them put it in, if I can save a few dollars here and there!

Henry, Check out Crutchfield's web site. They can supply the radio, amp, CD Changer and wiring that will interface with your Volvo wiring. If your 764 has the radio in upper dash you can get an adapter plate from crutchfield that will cover differance between Sony unit and OEM opening. It ain't that much different. A cheap fix is to go to salavage yard and find the sheeve that Volvo used when the radio was in lower dash. Cut off back end and slide your unit in place. The sleve covers all the nasty stuff, supports the radio and is cheap ($10 max). DO NOT REMOVE THE OLD RADIO SUPPORT BRACKET! It is needed to support the radio's back end and if you don't remove it very carefully you will royally screw up your wiper linkage cause the bracket is attached to the linkage support in most cases and if you pull/twist you can put the pivot point out of alignment and you will be rewarded with a sound that only a deaf person would endure.
I replaced all my OEM stuff with Boston Acoustics F and R door units and plan to put a pair in the rear deck and use the OEM 4 ch amp . Stoney
