Diagnostic Code[ALL/1998] posted by Steve Rogovich on

I have a code 2 - 4 - 1 on a 1990 740. Does anyone have an idea what this means? The books I have don't show it. The FI system is LH 2.4 if that is of any help.

Steve, 241 code is for EGR flow fault. This is an ignition system fault. I assume you are plugged into socket 6. This is a difficult code to fault trace if the problem is intermittant. Volvo has make several changes and updates to the EGR system. The s ystem determines how much exaust gas is flowing by measuring the temperature of the EGR pipe after the EGR valve. The problem could be a bad valve, EGR temp sensor, EGR controller, restricted EGR passage, broken vaccum line or the Ign. control unit itself . The EGR controller is probably the most likely. It is located on the left shock tower. Check the vac. lines going to it. Clear the code and see if it comes back. If it does, you would probably be wise to take it to a dealer or someone very up to date on Volvo bullitens etc. Hopefully it wont return after you clear it.

There was a bulletin on this that recomends cleaning the EGR probe connector. The probe and connector are under the intake manifold by the EGR valve.Unplug the standard 2 lead connector, shoot a little elect. cleaner mabey a little W-D40,plug it back ,and clear the code.I have about 70% success with this.Good luck!
