Sounds my Volvo makes...[ALL/1998] posted by L. Mydlarski on

Hi,

My 1983 240 DL is making a two noises which concern me and I was wondering whether anyone could help.

1) I had my rear trailer arm bushings replaced (which stopped this knocking sound from the back of the car). Now, sometimes when I'm coming to a stop or accelerating from a stop (particularly after the car has been sitting for a while) I hear a long low frequency rumble from the back and it generally won't do it again once it has done that. My freinds describe this sound as if my car was passing gas. I find it happens most frequently when I park in this garage where, when leaving, I must come to a stop on a slight downwards slope. When I come to a halt, the car often makes the sound for about 3 seconds. I've taken it back to my mechanic, but he hasn't found anything wrong.

2) Often, I'll be driving along and I'll come to a stop sign where I stop (as dictated by law). I'll then proceed and after driving for a few seconds I'll begin to hear a fairly loud constant humming sound from the rear. It is actually almost a nice sound, something like a piano would make arond middle C. It then fades away after maybe 5 seconds. This sound can happen repeatedly in one trip and I haven't brought this sound to the attention of my mechanic. And I am not sure whether this sounds occurs only if I turn after having come to a stop.

I'm almost sure the 1st sound is related to the rear trailer arm bushings. I don't know what the second sounds is. I was guessing that it might be a brake pad seizing to a rear disc (I have 4-wheel disc brakes and I use Volvo brake pads) though I'm generally wrong when it comes to car repair.

Thanks,

Laurent

Laurent, The first sound is probably the bushings twisting. Did the mechanic put them in correctly? It sounds like the bushings are reacting to a change in load or shift in weight. Check all rear bushings and support for drive shaft. Also does air temp affect the noise? Cold morning=more noise?

The second is the pre pump in gas tank. It is called the Volvo Hum and is available as a single on the Gotborg label... The pre pump in the tank is going bad and needs to be replaced. It's no big deal, about $100 total unless you want to do it yerself, then it's around $60. DO NOT GET NON VOLVO PRE PUMP! There is a BIG diff. between the cheapo Pep Boys type and Volvo, same goes for Main Fuel pump, the "generic" one is a piece of "generic" junk. I replaced, by lack of availability, both Pre and Main pumps with "generic" Auto Parts Store parts and got 1 year from Pre Pump and 30 months from Main pump. You pay for quality. Also change the screen and gaskets when you replace Pre Pump, put a lot of anti sieze lube on cover plate threads when you're done. Diagnose the pump by taking a long funnel like AT Fluid type and open gas cap, put little end inside and start car. Put ear to open end and listen for "hummmmm" that's a bad pre pump.

Hope this helps.

Stoney
