1994 960 wagon rear suspension[ALL/1998] posted by JH on

Here a question :

I thought we had multi-link rear suspension in our car. The manuals says 1994 WAGONS have "constant track" rear axle and sedans have the multi-link. Does that mean our rear axle is solid?

I better crawl under and look!

Does the multi link give a smoother ride over bumps?

Thanks in advance,

JH

If you have a 15.8 gallon fuel tank, it is not multi-link, or so I have been told. The change may have occured in 95. I'll try to look at my manual (92)

J H, Your 965 has a solid axle. Personally I prefer the solid axle. The multi-link may handle a little better, but seems a little stiffer and rougher over bumps. All Volvo rear axles seem to last forever. But unfornately Volvo bushings don't always fare so well. The multi-link suspension is well named as it does have more links, bushings, and pivot points than you can shake a stick at.

That brings me to your Consumer Reports question. The 1995 960 under went several suspension changes. Noises and rattles are more common on post 94 960's than previous models. These are usually a matter of tightening bolts. The power steering cooling loop can also cause a rattling noise or a shutter in the steering at times. You may even noticed this on you 1994. Other than this, the 1995 960 in my opinion is still a very good car.

The horse power reduction is primarily due to a change in the configuration of the cam shafts. Your year model and my 92 model seem to be designed more for the Autobauhn than for U.S. highways. The horse power and torque peak at a higher RPM. The cams were changed to give a smoother idle and better low end performance. The car still seems to have plenty of power. I subscribed to Consumer Reports for several years and found their opinion of several products to be different from my own personal experiences. They do offer some good information, but it is not the gospel.

Drive safely, Robert
