'84 Volvo Diesel[ALL/1998] posted by Mike on

We bought a 1984 240 Diesel Wagon a couple years ago. It threw a rod cracking the block and damaging the head. We love the car and were going to rebuild it until I talked to a few Volvo mechanics in the area. They didnt recommend reparing it because the engine design was flawed. Have you heard this, anyone else have a 240 diesel? If so do you like it? Should I fix it (otehr than the engine, the car is in great shape)?

I have owned a 240 D wagon since new -- 1984 -- and have put 230,000 maintenance free freeway miles on it. I have just had a ring job done due to difficulty starting (low compression) in winter months. There is nothing wrong with this engine although there is a lot of mythology about its origins, eg built by Audi for trucks in Europe. Others say that it was never meant to be a vehicle engine, but was originally designed to be a generator engine. It has been a great, albiet underpowered, 40 mpg workhorse. my difficulty now is finding replacement parts and mechanics that are willing to work on it. I am currently in need of a new head and cam shaft, but have not been able to find one new. Therefore, I am dependent upon remanufactored and good mechanics.
