Well, I'm amazed. Thanks so much for your advice and concern about my dear old 242, but I'm pleased to say that a conversation with Wayne at M&W in Tigard OR led me to have the strut installation re-inspected. Lo and behold, the struts were installed using the wrong sized washers at the top. The washers hung up a bit, causing the mechanic to think he had tightened them properly. After driving a bit, they loosened up and caused a lot of banging and clanking--not unlike bad bushings. So he repaired the struts--no charge-- and I'm a happy guy. What really bugs me is that this is the FIRST repair I have paid someone else to do on this car. I've done the clutch, overdrive repair, water pump, timing belt, brakes, heater fan, etc.

Matt, Don't feel bad, at least the guy was honest and backed his work up with replacement parts/labor. (I can give you a list of mechanics that aren't qualified to carry a tool box much less know how to use the contents). The differance is that YOU love and cherish your Volvo and take the time to double check everything and a mechanic is doing his best but like most of us humans, does make mistakes once in a while. You didn't say if washers were part of strut kit or not. Maybe a mispack of parts at strut maker is cause. I used to just assume that the bunch of nuts, bolts, washers, etc. packed by parts rebuilders and suppliers are correct, but years of surprises have taught me to lay stuff out and match piece for piece and if it on't match. Pick up the phone and find out why! Stoney
