Looking for some help in diagnosing a problem with my ECC. The air distribution seems to be stuck in the defrost mode. It doesn't matter where I set the "Function Selector", i.e., 'AUT', Air through panel vents, Bi-level, etc., the air flow continues through the defrost vents at the wind shield and side windows. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

The manual for my 49 960 says Some air will always flow onto the windsheild If it doesn't come out the other vents when not set to defrost, there's a problem.

John, Your problem may be as simple as a vaccum leak. Not always simple to find though. I assume you have a turbo engine. If so, the vaccum supply for the ac will come off of the intake manifold, pass through 1 or 2 check valves (black and white), then enter the bulk head (fire wall) probably near the evaperator.

With the engine idleing, listen for a hissing noise under the hood and under the dash. Look for broken vaccum lines. If the ck valves go bad it can cause this problem but usually only on accelleration. Even if you find a disconnected line, still check the check valves, (you should be able to blow through them from one direction but not the other. Be sure you put them back in the right direction too. A turbo engine has vaccum at idle but on acceleration you will have pressure in the intake system, and in your ac diaphrams if the ck valves are bad. Happy hunting. Robert
