my volvo won't start in Park, only neutral...any thoughts? there is a deep growling/grinding noise when ecselerating...any thoughts? it squeals when turning? how does the little button on the side of the gear shift work...it was on today (little orange arrow) then when going 60 mph on the highway, the car was screaming and the arrow wouldn't go away!! Please help me. I'm a girl, but not stupid. I know a little bit about cars, but not noises. Thanks.

Dawn-- Push the button again on the side of your shifter. This will turn off the orange arrow. When the arrow is on, your transmission automatically drops into a lower gear for climbing steep grades, etc. The lower gearing makes your car scream.

John, the light wouldn't go off. I had to pull over, shut my car off, then start back up (in neutral, thanks very much!!!!!) *LOL, but frustrated*

Dawn,; You've got 2 problems 1) Either the wire from the OD switch in shifter is broken or the relay is faulty. Could be either. 2) Sounds like the Park sensor switch maybe misaligned thats why car won't start in park but will start in neutral and if it's not that get over to a good transmission shop cause it might be something more serious.

#1 is an easy fix. take ascrew driver and undo the two screws holding on the plasic shifter cover. There should be a pair of green wires going up into shifter lever, they usually break at base where they go up into metal tube. If you can cut wires and solder new pair to old ones going into tube then take out switch and pull up new wires into shifter tube. Unsolder the wires and connect them to switch and pull wire back down into tube and refit switch. connect the new wire to old as far awat from break as possible, like where wire goes under carpet. Put about 4 winds of tape around wire at tube end as anti chafe safety attempt. If the wires ain't broke email me and I'll write out how to fi the cheapo relay Volvo used or you can spend 25 bucks for a 5 buck part from Volvo.

The no start in park could just be a misaligned starter safety switch or it could be a switch or sensor inside tranny I don't really know. The noise on acceleration could be the heat shield around manifold or somethin loose in exhaust system. Can't tell without hearing it and my web setup don't include Web Audio. Stoney

The squealing noise when you're turning could be from a couple of things: a loose power steering belt or *bad* steering alignment. You and/or a friend might be able to tighten the belt; check that out first. A bad pothole or curb-smack could well bugger up the alignment. Could also damage the tire, wheel and tie rods. Have an alignment shop check it out.

Come to think of it, if your car *did* hit a pothole or curb hard enough to do such damage, it may well also have caused some of the other noises you mention, and maybe knocked the shifter and its wires loose too.

Good luck-- I hope this helps!

Gary PS-- This is my first post to the B-Board, so please excuse any miscues.
