I'M A "VOLVO VIRGIN" & I recently failed inspection for emissions. I have an 85 740 gle. the motor vehicle guy says I have to much unburnt fuel or not enough air. I looked over the air filter it looked ok. I reattached the metal hose on the bottom of the engine . What else should I try and what does the problem sound like ?
also is there a temperature resistent tape or wrap which can be used to protect wiring harnesses which passes way to close to the engine block? Would anyone see a problem with doing this ? sould it create problems later on trouble shooting and locating future electical problems?

Mark, Get thee to a shop and a good technician. Compensate him well and he shall set you free from the evil control of the diabolical Emmissions Test Ogre Tribe! Seriously unless you've got the correct Volvo/Sun tech machinery and a lot of experience, leave this one to the pros. Check the listings in the Brickboard Parts, etc. listings for a recommended tech near you. As to the wiring if you're going to spend the time insulating it, you could just as easily reroute the portions that are in danger areas. The sleeving is available from auto electric supply houses or you could try and get some of the stuff that is used to insulate wiring in stoves/ovens. Stoney

Mark, You probably have a bad oxygen sensor. If you have a good idea of what you're doing you can usually get it sorted out with a digital volt-meter hooked up in parallel to the oxy sensor lead. Most rich/lean conditions can be solved in this way. But since you probably have a 3-wire sensor and they cost over $100, you might not want to risk it.
